While you can't drive all the way into town, there is a foot bridge is available for your use to reach the town of McCarthy or to head on to the Kennecott Copper Mine. From McCarthy, it is 4.5 miles to Kennecott or you can take one of the shuttles available from the town of McCarthy.
McCarthy AK was once the home to some 1,000 people, today there are fewer than 30 full time residents but the towns population balloons in the summertime. Gold and copper were discovered in the area in 1900 when the Kennecott Copper Company arrived operating a large mine and company town of Kennecott, now abandoned, about six miles from McCarthy. Over the 30-year operation of the Kennecott Mine some $200 million in gold and copper was extracted from the mine, making this one of the richest concentration of copper ore in the world.
